What happens when an Arts Centre works closely with a Primary School?

Small Grains is a new pilot education programme developed by Stapleford Granary for Key Stage 1 & 2 students at Stapleford Primary School. Small Grains is a responsive programme, inspired by and connected to the ever-changing cultural life of the Granary with a particular focus on visual art and live music. The programme explores ways of making the cultural programme accessible and inspirational to young children by exposing them to high quality music and art, giving them space and scope to respond in their own way and providing opportunities and tools to learn and create.

Now in it’s third year, pupils have been fortunate to experience a vast array of arts opportunities including:

  • live performances
  • visits from artists
  • practical activities such as clay, printing, 3D modelling and more
  • connections with sound through the Sound Lab
  • Year 6 Granary takeover
  • Tin Forest performance

Visits to the Granary are always a highlight. Please find further details of different visits and reports further down this page

Sound Lab 2025

In the Autumn term, we visited the Granary for Sound Lab (part II). This was an amazing practical event exploring how art meets science. Our pupils were able to participate in experiments exploring sound waves, trial a mechanism creating sound through movement and explore how materials affect the projection of sound. They also experience Colony, an immersive and tactile installation. It was an incredible visit.

Tin Forest 2025 (Inspire 25)

We were excited to participate in a trust wide event at the Granary: Inspire 25. The Tin Forest was an immersive and interactive arts experience, like nothing we’d experienced before!

Arts Award 2024 and 2025

Over the past two years, visits to the Granary have inspired our Arts Award. Year 2 have participated in Discover and Year 4 in Explore. The ever-changing world of the Granary have stimulated these experiences and have ranged from brutalist art (Mandy Payne) to discovering dinosaurs!
