Times Tables and Number Sense at Stapleford

This Year, we have started using Number Sense across the school. Number Sense is a research driven scheme designed to support pupils fluency knowledge, particularly for subitising, addition and subtraction facts and times tables. Please see the resources below for how you could help your child at home.

Number Sense for Years 1-3:

For each stage of learning, there are ‘learning at home’ guides to support. These will be sent out at different points during the year, based on where children are in their learning. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you have not received these.

Please see the attachments at the bottom of the page for resources from the parents information session held on 22. 10. 25.

Below, is an image of the core addition and subtraction facts and the calculation strategies that can be used to support them.

Times tables

Years 3-6 use the Number Sense programme for times tables, as well as other additional strategies and games. Learning our times tables can help us to estimate quickly, to calculate in our heads and are crucial for supporting maths learning in KS2. Please encourage your child to practice their times tables. Below are some other useful websites and resources to help with this.

Times Table Cafe

Early in 2026 we will hold our next Times tables cafe run by Y4 children. Please see attachments below for the resources from last year (including the slides, inverse cards and so on)

Number Sense

Key Stage 2 also use Number Sense to support times tables. Number Sense recognises 36 key times tables which are included below. Pupils start with the 2x table and continue moving through these. The 10 times table and 11 times table are not included in this 36 as they are patterns that many children quickly identify.

Times table check

As you may be aware, the Times Table Check will be compulsory for Year 4 students. Pupils are expected to know all of the tables (up to 12×12) and have 6 seconds to answer each question. There are 25 in total. Further information about this is included below, as well as links for websites where these can be practised.

Times Tables Rockstars

Key Stage 2 pupils all have logins to Times Table Rockstars. This is a brilliant way for children to increase their speed and fluency with the tables.

Students can also receive certificates based on their ‘Rock Status’ or the time and effort they’ve put into practicing. At different points in the year, we also hold Rock Battles between year groups where pupils participate to win as many points as possible for their classes.
